Adventures in Peru Hiking Across the High Plain

Adventures A few years ago, I was planning on spending the whole month of July in the neighboring district of Ayacucho, working with other missionaries there, but as often happens here, plans change. I had been thinking of heading south to a place called Huambo, maybe to explore for a few days, and then going to the end of the road to cross the high plain and stuff. The route I was planning on taking used to be used by popular trekkers for a few months, but has been closed due to unfavourable weather conditions,

Adventures A few years ago, I was planning on spending the whole month of July in the neighboring district of Ayacucho, working

so I didn’t know if that would be possible, and as usual, I wanted to find something new. The different paths people take to get from one place to the next are usually in the middle of nowhere, not usually a sign, but sometimes a fence, or a gate. About six months ago I decided to get some supplies and see what it was like, so here I am

Adventures Via Pampamarca, which is just south of the town of Cusco

I went to the end of the road, as you do in Peru, and set off towards a village called Charcana. From there I needed to cross the high plain safely, as rough trails can be quite dangerous. I ended up going a ways to Aguay-Namccamarca, which is at about 15,100 feet, and stopped for a few days to see what it was like, as well as to see some of the local Pierre particles. All I can say is that it is a very interesting area of the world, but also very cold, as well as very wet. On my last day, I had a taste of what it was like, as well as a chance to improve my English and French, after which I planned to catch dinner Adventures

That evening, I went to bed early, as usual

but this time I stayed awake well into the night. The weather was not cooperating as I expected, with rain and wind. However, I was lucky enough to be in a hotel in Puerto Natales, which has a friendly restaurant and very good accommodation. I got a bit delayed in reheating my food in the kitchen, but finally had a steak dinner, which I enjoyed very much

In the morning, I headed a little ways down the road to meet up with Coro, Haig, and a couple of other people I knew, bought a 6×6 transport and headed south. At the same time, I turned around at the last moment and went back towards Cusco, as I was told there was a bus from Canceca waiting for me at the last minute
